NATIONAL COALITION FOR THE The meeting was called to order at 9:30 a.m. by Sandi
Wiemers.
Sandi Wiemers reviewed the history of work on this project that has been completed since the Chicago, October 2002 meeting:
Kay Colen addressed the group and expressed her appreciation for everyone’s
attendance. Kay has been researching colleges in the southeastern quadrant
of the United States as the potential starting ground by contacting schools
who have established twirling lines with their band departments. Because
of her efforts, June Stroeber, Director of the twirlers at the University
Florida and her two captains, Sarah Horowitz and Kimberly Register were
in attendance at the meeting. To our most pleasant surprise, we found
out that the University of Florida has actually already established baton
twirling as a club sport on their campus. June stated that because of
this, they had been able to get more access to practice facilities and
that they were receiving some funding for competition, travel and uniform
expenses. Cindi Jones, Tennessee will be continuing to help Kay Colen with the
recruitment of schools in the southeast area. Kay will also be working
on recruitment of schools in the Pennsylvania, Virginia, Delaware, Maryland
area. It was stated that everyone should contact Kay with any other possibilities.
